The Mauser Kar71, also known as the Karabiner 71, was an early bolt-action carbine produced by Mauser. Introduced in the early 1870s, the Kar71 was chambered in 11mm Mauser and was based on the M1871 Mauser rifle. This carbine version was shorter and lighter than the full-length infantry rifle, making it more suitable for cavalry and artillery units. The Kar71 featured a single-shot mechanism and used black powder cartridges, which were typical of the era. It saw service in the German Empire and was used in several European conflicts during the late 19th century. Despite its solid construction, the Kar71 became obsolete relatively quickly due to the advent of smokeless powder and repeating rifles. Production figures are relatively low, with the carbine eventually being replaced by more modern designs like the Gewehr 88 and Mauser 98 rifles.
