AK-74

The AK-74 is a Soviet-designed assault rifle developed by Mikhail Kalashnikov in the 1970s to replace the AK-47. Chambered in 5.45x39mm, the AK-74 was introduced to improve accuracy and reduce recoil compared to its predecessor. The smaller caliber allowed for better control during automatic fire and increased range, making it more effective in modern combat scenarios.
The AK-74 was adopted by the Soviet military in 1974 and saw widespread use in the Soviet-Afghan War, where its performance in rugged, mountainous terrain earned it a reputation for reliability. The rifle's lighter weight and increased ammunition capacity gave Soviet soldiers a tactical advantage, particularly in prolonged engagements. Over time, the AK-74 became the standard-issue rifle for Soviet and later Russian forces.
Though newer models like the AK-74M and AK-12 have since been developed, the AK-74 remains in service in many countries and is still a popular choice among insurgent groups and paramilitary forces. Its durability, ease of use, and legendary reliability continue to make it one of the most iconic assault rifles in the world.
