The AMD-65 (Automata Modositott Deszant) is a Hungarian-designed variant of the AKM, tailored specifically for use by airborne and armored vehicle crews. Introduced in the early 1960s, it features a distinctive design that includes a shortened 12.6-inch barrel and a unique wire folding stock, making it compact and ideal for confined spaces. The AMD-65 retains the 7.62x39mm cartridge and the reliable Kalashnikov gas-operated action but incorporates features such as a prominent muzzle brake and a redesigned foregrip with metal and polymer components for improved handling during rapid fire.

Manufactured by FEG (Fegyver- es Gepgyar), the AMD-65 saw widespread production in Hungary, with thousands produced during its service lifetime. While the exact production figures are not publicly available, its production spanned several decades to meet the demands of the Hungarian People's Army and law enforcement units. The rifle was also exported to various allied nations and resistance movements during the Cold War, contributing to its global distribution. Its design simplicity and compatibility with AK-series components made it an attractive choice for diverse military applications.

The AMD-65 served as a standard-issue weapon for Hungarian forces and earned a reputation for rugged reliability, even in harsh environments. However, its shortened barrel and loud muzzle blast led to mixed reviews among soldiers, especially regarding accuracy and hearing protection in sustained engagements. Despite these drawbacks, the AMD-65 remains an iconic firearm in Hungary and has appeared in various conflicts worldwide. Its distinctive look and historical significance have made it a popular collector's item and a recognizable symbol of Hungarian military engineering.
