The Dror Light Machine Gun was developed in the late 1940s in Israel as an indigenous adaptation of the American Johnson M1941 light machine gun. Designed to provide the fledgling Israeli forces with a reliable automatic weapon, the Dror featured modifications to accommodate locally available ammunition, including the .303 British cartridge and, later, the 7.92x57mm Mauser. Its gas-operated, rotating-bolt mechanism allowed for semi-automatic and fully automatic fire, while its barrel could be quickly replaced to manage overheating during sustained fire.

Production of the Dror was undertaken in limited numbers during the late 1940s, with total output estimated at a few thousand units. It was primarily used during Israel's War of Independence in 1948, serving alongside a mix of imported and improvised weapons. However, the Dror faced operational challenges, such as sensitivity to dirt and dust in harsh desert conditions, as well as manufacturing issues stemming from the limited industrial capacity of the time.

Despite its shortcomings, the Dror holds historical significance as one of the first domestically produced firearms in Israeli history. It represents a pivotal step in the development of Israel's defense industry, which later produced world-renowned firearms such as the Uzi and Galil. Today, the Dror is remembered as an early example of Israeli ingenuity in armament production, with surviving examples sought after by collectors and historians alike.
