The M1941 Johnson machine gun was designed by Melvin Johnson, a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve officer, during the late 1930s as part of an effort to develop a more versatile automatic weapon. Unlike the traditional belt-fed machine guns of the time, the Johnson machine gun was magazine-fed, using a 20-round box magazine chambered for the standard .30-06 Springfield cartridge. Its most distinctive feature was its recoil-operated mechanism with a short-recoil action and rotating bolt, which contributed to its relative portability and ease of operation. The weapon could be fired from a bipod, shoulder, or tripod, making it adaptable to various combat roles.

Production of the M1941 Johnson machine gun was handled by Johnson Automatics, with a limited production run of around 9,500 units during World War II. The U.S. military's adoption of the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) and other established designs limited the Johnson machine gun's widespread use.
