The FN SCAR-L (Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle-Light) is a modular, multi-caliber assault rifle designed and manufactured by FN Herstal, Belgium. Developed in the early 2000s as part of a U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) program, the SCAR-L was intended to replace existing service rifles with a more versatile and adaptable platform. Chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO, it features a monolithic upper receiver with integrated Picatinny rails, ambidextrous controls, and a folding, adjustable stock. Its lightweight construction and adaptability to various mission requirements made it an attractive choice for modern military forces.

The SCAR-L entered limited production in the mid-2000s and saw initial deployment with SOCOM units. While exact production figures are not publicly disclosed, FN Herstal has produced thousands of SCAR-L rifles for both military and civilian markets. Despite its promising start, the SCAR-L faced competition from other platforms and was eventually phased out of U.S. SOCOM service in favor of the SCAR-H, which offered greater versatility due to its larger 7.62x51mm NATO chambering. However, the SCAR-L remains in use with various armed forces and law enforcement agencies worldwide.

The FN SCAR-L gained notoriety for its innovative design and initial adoption by elite units, earning a reputation as a reliable and accurate firearm. Its modularity, including quick barrel changes and compatibility with a wide range of accessories, set a new standard for modern assault rifles. While it faced criticism for high costs and maintenance demands, the SCAR-L continues to be a respected weapon, particularly among users who value its flexibility and performance in diverse operational environments. Its civilian versions, such as the SCAR 16S, have also found popularity in the commercial market, further cementing its legacy.
