The Galil ARM (Automatic Rifle Machine-gun) is an Israeli battle rifle/light machine gun variant of the Galil series, developed in the late 1960s by Israel Military Industries (IMI). Based on the Finnish RK 62, which itself was derived from the AK-47, the Galil ARM was chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO and featured a distinctive side-folding stock, a robust gas-operated action, and a built-in bipod for sustained fire. It was designed to serve as both an automatic rifle for infantry squads and a light support weapon, providing versatility on the battlefield. The weapon was also equipped with a carrying handle and a distinctive bottle opener built into the bipod, catering to the needs of Israeli soldiers in the field.

Production of the Galil ARM began in the early 1970s, with thousands manufactured for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as well as for export. While Israel initially adopted the Galil family, including the ARM, AR, and SAR variants, its service life within the IDF was relatively short due to the growing preference for lighter, more compact rifles such as the M16 and M4. Despite this, the Galil ARM was widely exported and used by various military and paramilitary forces around the world, particularly in South America, Africa, and Asia. Nations such as Colombia, South Africa (where it was produced locally as the R4), and the Philippines have fielded versions of the Galil for decades.

The Galil ARM gained a reputation for its durability, reliability in harsh environments, and adaptability in various combat scenarios. However, its relatively heavy weight compared to other 5.56mm rifles limited its appeal as a standard-issue infantry weapon. While phased out of frontline service in Israel, the Galil platform has influenced later designs and remains in use by some forces worldwide. It is often regarded as one of the most well-engineered derivatives of the AK family, blending rugged reliability with modern features.
