The BL 12-pounder 6 cwt gun was a British field artillery piece developed in the late 19th century for use by horse artillery and light field units. Designed as a breech-loading gun, it fired 12-pound (5.4 kg) shells and was mounted on a light, two-wheeled carriage for rapid deployment. The gun featured a wire-wound steel barrel, a practical recoil system, and a relatively high rate of fire, making it an effective weapon for both direct fire and light bombardment. Its design prioritized mobility, allowing cavalry and mounted artillery units to keep pace with advancing troops.

The BL 12-pounder 6 cwt gun saw extensive service with the British Army and Commonwealth forces, particularly during the Second Boer War (1899-1902) and World War I. During the Boer War, it was valued for its maneuverability in the open terrain of South Africa, providing crucial artillery support to British columns. Although still in service at the outbreak of World War I, it was quickly overshadowed by more modern artillery such as the QF 18-pounder. Nonetheless, it continued to be used in secondary roles, including training and coastal defense, throughout the early 20th century.

While not as famous as later British artillery pieces, the BL 12-pounder 6 cwt gun holds historical significance as a transitional weapon in artillery development. Its breech-loading mechanism and enhanced mobility set the stage for more advanced field guns. Today, surviving examples can be found in military museums and historical collections, reflecting its role in British and Commonwealth military history. Its service in multiple conflicts demonstrated the adaptability of early modern artillery and the importance of mobile firepower in late 19th and early 20th-century warfare.
