The ZK383 submachine gun was designed in Czechoslovakia in the late 1930s by Vaclav and Frantisek Koucky, two prominent firearms designers. Manufactured by the Ceska zbrojovka (CZ) factory, the ZK383 was unique for its time, featuring a modular design with a removable barrel and the option to attach a bipod, making it versatile for roles ranging from infantry support to close-quarters combat. Chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum, the weapon utilized a blowback operation with an open-bolt system, offering simplicity and reliability. It also featured a rate-of-fire selector, which allowed users to switch between automatic and semi-automatic firing modes.

Production of the ZK383 began in 1938 and continued through the Second World War and into the postwar years. While initial production served the Czechoslovak military, the German occupation led to its use by the Wehrmacht, who appreciated its robust design. After the war, the ZK383 saw limited use by other nations, particularly in South America and the Balkans. Although exact production numbers are unclear, the submachine gun was manufactured in the tens of thousands, with its adaptability ensuring its relevance for a variety of roles.

The ZK383 is notable for its innovative design, blending the characteristics of a submachine gun with some features of a light machine gun, such as the bipod. This hybrid functionality gave it an edge in flexibility but also made it heavier and more complex than other submachine guns of its era, such as the MP40 or Sten. Despite its limited international fame, the ZK383 remains a respected piece of firearms history, exemplifying Czech engineering expertise and its contributions to 20th-century small arms development.
