The Erma EMP (Erma Maschinenpistole) is a German submachine gun developed in the late 1920s by the Erma-Werke company. Chambered primarily in 9mm Parabellum, the EMP features a blowback action with a simple open-bolt design, making it relatively easy to manufacture and maintain. Its distinctive barrel jacket with cooling slots, along with the curved 32-round magazine, gave it a recognizable profile, and it was known for its reliable performance and controllable rate of fire, making it popular among users.

Production of the Erma EMP began in the early 1930s, with approximately 10,000 to 15,000 units produced before and during the early years of World War II. Though it was not officially adopted by the German military, the EMP was widely exported to countries like Spain, China, and Argentina, where it saw extensive service. The gun was also used by German police units and Waffen-SS troops during the early stages of the war, especially in situations requiring a compact, rapid-firing weapon.

The EMP gained a reputation for reliability and ease of use, though it became somewhat overshadowed by newer submachine guns like the MP40 as World War II progressed. Its export success, however, solidified its presence worldwide, where it was used in a variety of conflicts well after its production ended. Today, the Erma EMP is regarded as a classic interwar submachine gun, valued by collectors and historical firearms enthusiasts for its distinctive design and service in numerous international conflicts.
