The Winchester Model 1897, also known as the "Trench Gun," was a pump-action shotgun designed by John Browning and introduced in 1897. Chambered in 12-gauge, it was one of the first shotguns to feature a pump-action mechanism, which allowed for faster cycling of rounds. The M1897 was used by American forces during World War I, where it gained a reputation for its effectiveness in close-quarters combat.

Adopted by the U.S. military for trench warfare, the M1897 was equipped with a heat shield and bayonet lug, making it a formidable weapon in the tight confines of the trenches. Its ability to fire multiple rounds quickly made it particularly deadly, leading German forces to call for its ban under the Hague Conventions. Despite this, the M1897 remained in use throughout the war and beyond.

The Winchester M1897 continued to see service during World War II, and its influence can still be seen in modern pump-action shotguns. Its role in both world wars and its innovative design have made it one of the most iconic shotguns in history.
