The Browning M1917 was a water-cooled, belt-fed machine gun designed by John Browning and adopted by the U.S. military in 1917. Chambered in .30-06, it was developed for use during World War I and saw extensive service in the trenches of Europe. The M1917 was renowned for its durability and ability to sustain long bursts of fire without overheating.

Although it arrived late in World War I, the M1917 was widely used during the interwar period and throughout World War II, especially by U.S. forces in the Pacific and European theaters. Its water-cooling system allowed it to maintain high rates of fire for extended periods, making it ideal for defensive positions.

The M1917 is notable for its contribution to the U.S. military's firepower during both world wars. Its design influenced later machine guns, and it remained in service in various roles well into the Korean War. Today, it is remembered as one of Browning's most successful machine gun designs.
