The BM59 is an Italian battle rifle developed by Beretta in the 1950s, based on the American M1 Garand. Chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO, it was designed to replace the aging M1 Garand and provide Italian forces with a more modern, select-fire weapon. The BM59 featured a detachable box magazine, a shorter barrel, and the ability to fire in both semi-automatic and fully automatic modes.

Adopted by the Italian military in 1959, the BM59 was used extensively throughout the Cold War period. It saw service with Italian forces in various peacekeeping missions and was also exported to other countries, including Indonesia and Nigeria. Its robust design and firepower made it a reliable weapon for infantry units.

The BM59 was eventually replaced by more modern assault rifles, such as the Beretta AR70/90. However, its influence on subsequent battle rifle designs, including its modification of the Garand platform, has ensured its place in the history of 20th-century military firearms.
