The Ruger AC-556 is a selective-fire version of the Mini-14 rifle, designed by Sturm, Ruger & Co. and introduced in the late 1970s. It was developed to offer military and law enforcement agencies a reliable, lightweight, and compact automatic weapon chambered in .223 Remington/5.56x45mm NATO. The AC-556 incorporates a robust gas-operated, rotating bolt mechanism and features a selector switch allowing for semi-automatic, three-round burst, or fully automatic fire. Ruger also offered the AC-556 in several configurations, including models with fixed or folding stocks and different barrel lengths to suit various tactical needs.

The AC-556 was produced from its introduction until the early 2000s, with several thousand units manufactured during its production run. Its primary market was law enforcement and paramilitary units, where it found limited but notable adoption. The rifle was particularly valued for its compactness and versatility, making it suitable for vehicle operations and urban environments. Despite being overshadowed by competitors such as the M16 and other military-grade rifles, the AC-556 gained a reputation as a durable and dependable firearm, though its accuracy under automatic fire and overheating issues were sometimes criticized.

The AC-556 is a relatively niche firearm but remains notable for its role as a bridge between civilian sporting rifles and fully automatic military weapons. It has appeared in a variety of movies and television series, further enhancing its recognition among firearms enthusiasts. Though no longer in production, the AC-556 has become a collectible firearm, sought after for its connection to the iconic Mini-14 platform and its unique position in Ruger’s history. Its simplicity and reliability continue to be appreciated by enthusiasts and collectors alike.
