The Bofors 37 mm anti-tank gun was developed in Sweden during the early 1930s by the Bofors company, a well-regarded armaments manufacturer. It was a lightweight, towed anti-tank gun designed to defeat the armor of early tanks and armored vehicles. The gun featured a semi-automatic, breech-loading mechanism with a split-trail carriage and a high muzzle velocity, enabling it to penetrate contemporary armored threats effectively. Its compact design and ease of deployment made it popular among various armed forces worldwide.

After its introduction in 1934, the gun was exported extensively and adopted by many countries, including Poland, Finland, the Netherlands, and China. Notably, the Polish Army used it under the designation wz.36, and it was locally produced in license-built variants. Its performance during early World War II conflicts, such as the Winter War and the invasion of Poland, demonstrated its capability against light and medium tanks of the time. However, as armor thickness increased, the 37 mm caliber became less effective, and the gun was gradually phased out of frontline service.

Despite becoming obsolete in the anti-tank role by the mid-war years, the Bofors 37 mm retained a place in history due to its wide usage and early-war effectiveness. Over 1,200 units were produced by Bofors alone, with additional units manufactured under license in various countries. Its design also served as a foundation for self-propelled gun adaptations and inspired other anti-tank weapon developments. Today, it is regarded as one of the classic early-war anti-tank guns, remembered for its precision and reliability.
