The MG 18 TuF (Tank und Flieger) was a German heavy machine gun developed during World War I as a response to the increasing threat posed by tanks and aircraft. Designed to fire the powerful 13.2x92mm TuF cartridge, it was one of the first attempts to create an anti-tank and anti-aircraft machine gun. The weapon was based on the design principles of the MG 08, Germany's standard machine gun of the war, but it was significantly larger and heavier to accommodate the high-caliber ammunition. Featuring a water-cooled barrel and a belt-fed system, the MG 18 TuF was intended to provide German forces with a means to penetrate the armor of early tanks, such as the British Mark series.

Production of the MG 18 TuF was limited due to the late stage of its development, with only a small number of prototypes and pre-production models completed before the war ended in 1918. The weapon was not fielded in large numbers, and its potential impact on the battlefield was never fully realized. However, its design influenced future developments in heavy machine guns and anti-tank weaponry. The concept of a dedicated anti-tank machine gun was later revisited in the interwar period, leading to the development of similar weapons, such as the Soviet PTRD-41 and the German PzB 39 anti-tank rifles.

The MG 18 TuF is notable for being one of the first machine guns specifically designed to counter armored vehicles, making it a significant step in the evolution of military firearms. Although it never saw widespread service, its existence demonstrated the growing need for specialized anti-tank and anti-aircraft weaponry in modern warfare. Today, surviving examples of the MG 18 TuF are rare and highly sought after by collectors and museums, providing a glimpse into early efforts to adapt to the changing dynamics of the battlefield during World War I.
