The HK VP-70 (Volkspistole 70) is a groundbreaking handgun designed by Heckler & Koch and introduced in 1970. It was the first polymer-framed handgun to be mass-produced, predating the popular Glock series by over a decade. The VP-70 features an innovative design with a unique double-action-only trigger system, an integrated 18-round magazine capacity, and a distinctive stock that doubles as a holster. When the stock is attached, the VP-70 can be switched to a three-round burst mode, making it a precursor to modern machine pistols.

The VP-70 was produced from 1970 to 1989, with two primary variants: the VP-70M (military) and VP-70Z (civilian). The military version included the burst-fire capability with the detachable stock, while the civilian model was limited to semi-automatic fire. Despite its advanced design, the VP-70 was not a commercial success, with fewer than 10,000 units produced. Its heavy trigger pull and unconventional ergonomics limited its appeal to both military users and civilian enthusiasts. However, the pistol is often regarded as an engineering milestone for its forward-thinking approach.

Although the VP-70 saw limited adoption in military and law enforcement roles, it achieved notoriety for its futuristic design and its influence on subsequent firearm development. The weapon's innovative use of polymer materials paved the way for lightweight, durable pistols in the years to come. Additionally, the VP-70 gained cultural recognition through appearances in science fiction media, reinforcing its status as a visionary design ahead of its time. Today, it is a collector's item and a subject of study for firearm enthusiasts interested in pioneering firearm technology.
