The MG13 machine gun was a German light machine gun developed in the late 1920s, based on the World War I-era Dreyse MG 13. Designed by Rheinmetall, the MG13 was a short-recoil, air-cooled weapon chambered for the standard 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridge. It utilized a 25-round detachable box magazine or a 75-round saddle drum, allowing for both sustained and burst fire. The gun was notable for its lightweight design and a folding bipod, which made it highly portable. Its adjustable rate of fire and compatibility with different ammunition feeding systems gave it a degree of versatility unusual for its time.

Production of the MG13 began in the early 1930s, with several thousand units manufactured before it was replaced by the more advanced MG34. Initially adopted by the Reichswehr and later by the Wehrmacht, the MG13 was primarily used in infantry and vehicle-mounted roles. It saw extensive service in the Spanish Civil War, where it was praised for its reliability and accuracy. However, as Germany rearmed and sought a more versatile general-purpose machine gun, the MG13 was gradually phased out of frontline service. Many surplus units were exported to countries like Portugal, where it remained in use as the "Metralhadora Dreyse m/938."

The MG13 is remembered for its role in transitioning German machine gun design during a critical period of rearmament. Although its production numbers were relatively limited compared to later German machine guns, the MG13 laid the groundwork for the development of the MG34 and MG42, which became iconic in World War II. Today, the MG13 is a sought-after collector's item and an example of interwar innovation in small arms technology. Its service in conflicts like the Spanish Civil War further underscores its historical significance as a precursor to the modern general-purpose machine gun.
