The Yugoslavian M53 is a general-purpose machine gun developed in the early 1950s by Yugoslavia's Zastava Arms. Based closely on the German MG42 design, the M53 is chambered in 7.92x57mm Mauser and features a similar roller-locked recoil-operated mechanism, with a high cyclic rate of fire that gives it formidable suppressive power. The M53 was designed to be a durable, reliable, and easy-to-use machine gun that could be mass-produced to support the Yugoslav People's Army during the Cold War.

Produced primarily by Zastava Arms, the M53 saw extensive production with tens of thousands of units manufactured for use within Yugoslavia and for export to allied countries. The machine gun was a standard issue in Yugoslav forces for decades and has seen use in numerous regional conflicts, including the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s. The M53, with its similarity to the MG42, was particularly appreciated for its rugged design and firepower, although it was gradually replaced by more modern designs in frontline roles.

Despite being a derivative of the MG42, the M53 has achieved notoriety in its own right, particularly due to its role in various Balkan conflicts. Known for its high rate of fire and battlefield durability, the M53 remains a common sight in the hands of militia groups and paramilitary forces in the region. Although largely phased out of official military service, surplus M53s are popular among collectors and firearms enthusiasts for their historical connection to the legendary MG42 design and their continued presence in conflict zones.
