The Daewoo K2 is a South Korean assault rifle developed in the early 1980s by Daewoo Precision Industries to serve as the standard-issue rifle for the Republic of Korea Armed Forces. The K2 was designed to replace the American M16A1, which had been in widespread use. Combining elements from the American M16 and the AK-47, the K2 features a gas-operated, piston-driven system similar to the AK, alongside a rotating bolt system akin to the M16. Chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO, the K2 provides a balance of accuracy and durability, making it suitable for various combat environments.

Production of the K2 began in 1984, with Daewoo Precision Industries manufacturing approximately 700,000 units to supply South Korean forces and limited exports to other nations. The rifle has undergone several modifications over the years, including adjustable sights and a redesigned handguard, making it compatible with modern optics and accessories. The K2 has proven highly reliable in extreme weather conditions, which is crucial for deployment in the diverse climates of the Korean Peninsula. Its adaptability to different roles has made it a versatile firearm within the South Korean military.

Known for its rugged construction and reliability, the Daewoo K2 has achieved notoriety as a respected battle rifle within South Korea and among enthusiasts of military firearms. Although not widely adopted outside of South Korea, the K2 has gained a reputation among collectors and soldiers for combining effective design elements from both Eastern and Western rifles. Its longstanding service in the Korean military has cemented its place as a reliable weapon, and its continued use highlights its durability and effectiveness as a military rifle.
