The Pattern 1881 Shashka was an updated version of the earlier Cossack shashka, standardized for use by the Russian military. It maintained the distinctive features of the shashka, including the curved, single-edged blade and lack of a guard, which facilitated fluid, slashing attacks. This version was specifically designed to be more uniform for widespread military adoption.

The Pattern 1881 saw extensive use during the late 19th century and into the 20th century, including World War I and the Russian Civil War. Russian cavalry, particularly the famed Cossack units, wielded this weapon with great skill, making it a symbol of Russian martial tradition.
