The MAT-49 is a French 9mm submachine gun designed in 1949 by Manufacture Nationale d'Armes de Tulle (MAT). It was developed to replace older submachine guns used by French forces and saw extensive use during the First Indochina War, the Algerian War, and other post-World War II conflicts. The MAT-49 is characterized by its simple, robust construction, folding magazine well, and blowback-operated mechanism, making it easy to produce and maintain. Chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum, it had a high rate of fire and was favored by French paratroopers and colonial troops. Production ran from 1949 until 1979, with over 700,000 units manufactured. The MAT-49 was highly regarded for its reliability in harsh environments, including jungle and desert combat. Though it was eventually replaced by more modern firearms, the MAT-49 remained in use with various French forces and insurgent groups well into the 1980s and 1990s.
