The Type 56 SKS is a Chinese-produced version of the Soviet SKS carbine. Chambered in 7.62x39mm, it was manufactured by the People's Republic of China from the late 1950s onwards and became a staple weapon for Chinese forces during the Cold War. The Type 56 was essentially a direct copy of the Soviet design, though China produced it in vast numbers.

Used extensively during the Vietnam War, the Type 56 SKS was supplied to North Vietnamese forces and other communist allies. Its rugged design and reliability in harsh conditions made it a popular weapon among irregular forces. The carbine saw action in numerous conflicts throughout Asia and Africa during the Cold War.

The Type 56 SKS is remembered for its widespread use and contribution to various Cold War conflicts. Its association with both Chinese and communist forces has made it a symbol of the era, and it remains a popular firearm among military surplus collectors.
