The M1892 Krag-Jorgensen was a bolt-action rifle adopted by the United States in 1892, based on a design by Norwegian inventors Ole Herman Johannes Krag and Erik Jorgensen. It was notable for its unique magazine system, which allowed rounds to be loaded individually through a side door without opening the bolt. Chambered in .30-40 Krag, it saw use during the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War. The Krag was praised for its smooth bolt action but criticized for its relatively low rate of fire and weaker cartridge compared to the Mauser rifles used by Spanish forces. Around 500,000 units were produced before being replaced by the Springfield M1903. Despite its short service life, the Krag is remembered for its role in a pivotal era of American military history.
