The Mle. 1892 Berthier was a bolt-action rifle adopted by the French military in the late 19th century. Chambered in 8mm Lebel, the Berthier rifle was designed to replace the aging Gras and Lebel rifles, offering improved handling and faster reloading through the use of a three-round en-bloc clip. The rifle was initially issued to colonial troops but eventually became a standard infantry weapon in the French Army during World War I.

The Berthier rifle gained widespread use during World War I, where it proved to be more maneuverable and easier to reload than the Lebel rifle, especially in the trench warfare environment. Although it only held three rounds, a later version increased the capacity to five, making it more competitive with other bolt-action rifles of the time. The Berthier was also used by French forces in World War II, although by then it was largely considered obsolete.

Despite being replaced by more modern rifles, the Mle. 1892 Berthier has left a lasting legacy. It served in multiple major conflicts and was an important step in the evolution of French infantry rifles, transitioning from single-shot rifles to clip-fed designs that allowed for more rapid fire in combat situations.
