Walther P38
Go Back to Semi-Automatic Pistol
| |||||||||||||
The Walther P38 was developed in Nazi Germany in the late 1930s as a replacement for the Luger P08. Chambered in 9mm, it was designed to be more cost-effective and easier to produce than the P08. The P38 was notable for being one of the first service pistols to feature a double-action trigger mechanism.
Adopted by the Wehrmacht in 1939, the P38 saw extensive use during World War II. Its rugged design and double-action mechanism made it a reliable sidearm in various combat conditions, and it became a favorite among German officers. The pistol was also widely used by Axis allies.
The P38's post-war legacy includes its use by the West German Bundeswehr and police forces, as well as its influence on subsequent pistol designs. Its role as a mass-produced military pistol, combined with its technical innovations, has made it a staple in the history of firearms.
