The Modele 1915 CSRG Chauchat, often simply referred to as the "Chauchat," was a light machine gun developed by the French during World War I. It was chambered in 8mm Lebel and designed to provide French infantry with mobile firepower in the trenches. The Chauchat was the most widely produced automatic weapon of World War I, with over 250,000 units manufactured. However, it gained infamy for its unreliable performance, particularly in muddy and harsh battlefield conditions, where its open magazine design made it prone to jamming. Despite these flaws, it was one of the first squad automatic weapons ever fielded, marking an important step in the evolution of light machine guns. The Chauchat is often remembered more for its shortcomings than its innovations, though it played a critical role in early attempts to bring automatic firepower to the infantry squad level.
