The DARDO, originally known as the Breda Type-70 and also marketed as the OTO Twin 40L70 Compact, is an Italian twin-barrel close-in weapon system developed by Breda and Oto Melara for naval air defense. It mounts two 40x364 mmR Breda-built Bofors 40 mm L/70 guns in an enclosed turret, paired with precision fire control (RTN-10X and RTN-20X Orion systems) to track and engage incoming missiles, drones, aircraft, surface threats, and floating mines.

Developed in the late 1960s and entering service in the late 1970s, the DARDO has seen widespread adoption-serving on frigates, destroyers, missile boats, and auxiliary vessels in Italy and at least twenty other navies. Total production numbers span "many dozens," reflecting its measured yet persistent demand around the globe.

Noted for its robust firepower and versatility, the DARDO distinguishes itself among Western CIWS with its 40 mm caliber and dual-barrel design. Depending on variant, it fires at 600 rounds per minute (Compact/Marlin) or up to 900 rounds per minute (Fast Forty), with an effective firing range of approximately 4,000 meters and a theoretical maximum of 12,500 meters. Its ability to switch from high-explosive to armor-piercing ammunition under threat, fast elevation (13° to +85°), and full 360° coverage contribute to its enduring reputation as a reliable defensive system in contested maritime environments.
