The 40CTC (40 mm Cased Telescoped Cannon), developed by CTA International-a Franco-British joint venture-represents a cutting-edge medium-calibre autocannon that uses telescoped ammunition to dramatically reduce size and improve integration. It operates via a recoil-operated, rotating breech mechanism and is fed through an automatic linkless Ammunition Handling System (AHS), enabling compact installation in modern IFV and reconnaissance vehicle turrets. Its design supports selectable ammunition types, high elevation angles, and firing on the move.

Design began in 1997, with qualification following in the mid-2010s. By late 2021, CTA International had delivered the final of 515 cannons ordered by the UK Ministry of Defence-originally destined for the Ajax and Warrior platforms-while France began fielding the system on its EBRC Jaguar reconnaissance vehicles in 2022. Over 600 CT guns have since been produced to date.

The 40CTC is noted for combining 40 mm firepower with unusually compact dimensions, thanks to its telescoped ammunition-delivering up to four times the terminal effect of a 30 mm round while maintaining low turret intrusion. Its automatic carousel feed enables multi-type ammunition switching and high elevation angles (up to ~85°), making it well-suited for engaging drones and air threats in urban environments. These traits have marked it as a "game-changer" for modern NATO armored vehicle armament.
