The XM913 is a modern 50mm chain-driven autocannon developed by Northrop Grumman for the United States Army, based on the proven design principles of the 30mm Bushmaster series. Intended as a next-generation medium-caliber weapon, the XM913 features an externally powered chain-driven action, providing high reliability and reduced jamming potential. The system is chambered for the new 50x228mm cartridge, offering significantly increased range, lethality, and armor penetration compared to existing 25mm and 30mm systems. This weapon is a core element of the Army's Advanced Lethality and Accuracy System for Medium-Caliber (ALAS-MC) initiative, designed to counter evolving threats on the battlefield.

The XM913 has been integrated into various test platforms, most notably the Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV) and the XM30 Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle (formerly part of the Next Generation Combat Vehicle program). Though not yet in full-rate production, the gun has gone through extensive testing and limited initial production as of the early 2020s. Northrop Grumman has delivered several pre-production units to the Army for vehicle integration and evaluation. The U.S. military aims for the XM913 to eventually replace or augment legacy 25mm and 30mm guns such as the M242 Bushmaster in future combat vehicles.

While the XM913 has yet to see active combat use, it is considered a significant leap in medium-caliber firepower. Its development is a response to peer and near-peer adversary capabilities, particularly the increasing use of better-armored vehicles and unmanned systems. The XM913 is also designed to fire a variety of advanced munitions, including airburst and armor-piercing rounds, making it a flexible and formidable weapon in both conventional and asymmetric warfare. Its notoriety stems from its anticipated role in transforming U.S. ground combat vehicle firepower for the 21st century.
