The QBZ-03, also known as the Type 03, is a Chinese assault rifle developed in the early 2000s by Norinco (China North Industries Corporation). It was designed to offer an alternative to the bullpup-style QBZ-95 rifle, catering to users accustomed to traditional rifle layouts. The QBZ-03 uses a conventional configuration with a gas-operated, rotating bolt mechanism and is chambered for the 5.8x42mm DBP87 cartridge, which is the standard ammunition for modern Chinese military firearms. Featuring a polymer stock and handguard to reduce weight, the rifle incorporates adjustable iron sights and compatibility with optics, making it versatile for various combat scenarios.

Production of the QBZ-03 began in limited numbers around 2003, primarily for use by Chinese paramilitary forces, reserve units, and some military personnel. While it was intended to supplement the QBZ-95 as a more ergonomic and familiar design, its production never reached the same scale, as the bullpup configuration remained the primary focus of the People's Liberation Army (PLA). Estimates suggest that tens of thousands of QBZ-03 rifles were manufactured, primarily serving in second-line roles and specific environments where the traditional layout proved advantageous.

The QBZ-03 is notable for its role as a transitional firearm within the modernization of China's infantry forces. While it has not achieved the widespread adoption or iconic status of the QBZ-95, it is respected for its simplicity and reliability. The rifle's more traditional layout has made it popular with units less accustomed to bullpup designs, as well as with foreign buyers in export markets. Its limited notoriety stems from its secondary role within the Chinese arsenal, but it remains a significant example of China's evolving approach to small arms development.
