The Mauser BK-27 is a 27mm revolver cannon designed by Mauser-Werke Oberndorf (now part of Rheinmetall) in the 1970s as a lightweight yet highly effective aircraft-mounted weapon. Using a single rotating barrel and a gas-operated mechanism, the BK-27 achieves a high rate of fire-up to 1,700 rounds per minute-while maintaining a compact and durable design. It was developed primarily for the Panavia Tornado multirole combat aircraft, but its versatility has allowed it to be integrated into various platforms, including the Eurofighter Typhoon and the Saab JAS 39 Gripen.

Production of the BK-27 began in the late 1970s and has continued to support its widespread use among NATO air forces and other operators. The cannon fires 27x145mm ammunition, providing superior ballistic performance and destructive power compared to earlier 20mm systems. Its reliability and adaptability have led to its deployment on both fixed-wing aircraft and naval platforms, with some ground-based air defense systems also utilizing it as a primary armament.

The Mauser BK-27 has gained notoriety for its exceptional accuracy and stopping power, making it a critical weapon in air-to-air and air-to-ground engagements. Its role in modern combat operations underscores its importance, with continued upgrades ensuring its relevance in contemporary warfare. The cannon's reputation as one of the most effective aircraft-mounted weapons has solidified its status as a cornerstone of Western air combat armament.
