The Vektor SS-77 is a South African general-purpose machine gun designed in the late 1970s to replace the FN MAG in South African military service. It is a belt-fed, air-cooled, gas-operated weapon chambered for the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge. The design emphasizes modularity, allowing components to be easily replaced in the field, and includes a quick-change barrel for sustained fire. Its relatively light weight and ergonomic design make it suitable for both infantry and vehicle-mounted roles.

Production of the SS-77 began in the early 1980s, with manufacturing handled by the state-owned arms manufacturer Denel (formerly Lyttelton Engineering Works). The weapon was produced in substantial quantities for the South African Defence Force (SADF) and has since been exported to various countries. In addition to the standard 7.62mm version, a variant chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO, known as the Mini SS, was developed to meet the needs of lighter infantry roles and modern combat requirements.

The Vektor SS-77 earned a reputation for reliability and durability in harsh environments, making it well-suited for operations in the African bush during conflicts such as the South African Border War. Its robust construction and ease of maintenance ensured consistent performance under demanding conditions. Although newer designs have emerged, the SS-77 remains in service with some military and paramilitary forces, a testament to its effective design and legacy in modern South African small arms history.
