The Norinco Type 89 155mm towed howitzer is a Chinese-designed artillery system developed in the late 1980s to provide long-range fire support to the People's Liberation Army (PLA). Based on the Austrian GHN-45 howitzer, the Type 89 features a 155mm caliber barrel with a 45-caliber length, capable of firing a variety of ammunition, including high-explosive, smoke, and illumination rounds. With a maximum range of approximately 39 kilometers when using rocket-assisted projectiles, it offers enhanced firepower compared to older PLA artillery systems.

Production of the Type 89 began in the late 1980s, and it was officially introduced into PLA service in 1989. While exact production figures remain undisclosed, it is believed to have been produced in significant numbers to equip PLA units during a period of modernization. The Type 89 has also been exported to several countries, including Pakistan and Bangladesh, showcasing China's growing prominence in the global arms market. Its ease of deployment and robust design have made it a reliable choice for field operations.

The Type 89 155mm howitzer gained notoriety for its role in regional conflicts and as a symbol of China's expanding self-reliance in military technology. It has been used in various military exercises and has contributed to China's ability to project artillery firepower effectively. While later replaced in frontline PLA units by more advanced systems such as the PLZ-45 self-propelled howitzer, the Type 89 remains in service with reserve and export forces, demonstrating its enduring utility in modern warfare.
