The ZH-29 and ZH-32 were Czech semi-automatic rifles designed by Emmanuel Holek in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Manufactured by Ceskoslovenska zbrojovka, the rifles were chambered for the 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridge and utilized a unique gas-operated tilting-bolt mechanism. The ZH-29 was notable for its innovative design, which emphasized simplicity and ease of manufacturing. The rifle featured a fixed 10-round magazine loaded with stripper clips and was made with precision-machined components, giving it excellent accuracy for the era. The ZH-32 was a slightly improved variant with minor modifications for better reliability and user ergonomics.

Production of the ZH-29 began in 1929, with the ZH-32 following shortly thereafter. However, both rifles saw limited production, with only a few thousand units manufactured in total. They were primarily intended for export and evaluation by various nations, including China and Ethiopia. Despite the modest production numbers, the rifles gained a reputation for their advanced design and high-quality construction. However, their complexity and cost made them less appealing to militaries that favored simpler, more cost-effective bolt-action rifles.

The ZH-29 and ZH-32 rifles achieved notoriety as some of the earliest examples of reliable semi-automatic rifles in military service. They were ahead of their time, offering a significant increase in firepower compared to traditional bolt-action rifles. While they were not adopted on a wide scale, their innovative design influenced future firearms development. The ZH-29's tilting-bolt mechanism, for instance, would inspire similar systems in later rifles like the FN FAL. Today, the ZH-29 and ZH-32 are prized by collectors for their historical significance and engineering excellence.
