The Type 95 Shin Gunto was a standardized Japanese military sword introduced in 1935 for non-commissioned officers (NCOs) in the Imperial Japanese Army. Designed to provide a practical and affordable alternative to the traditional hand-crafted katana, it featured a machine-made blade with a simple design, typically forged from non-traditional steel. The hilt was made of cast metal with a faux ray skin grip, and the scabbard was constructed from steel, often painted or lacquered to prevent corrosion. Its design adhered to the aesthetics of the traditional Japanese sword, including a straight, functional blade and the absence of elaborate ornamentation.

During its production, the Type 95 was manufactured in large quantities to meet the growing demands of Japan's expanding military campaigns throughout Asia and the Pacific. Initial production models were crafted by Tokyo's Kokura Arsenal and later outsourced to various factories to increase output, with some estimates suggesting over 250,000 units were produced. Standardized features made it easier and quicker to produce, ensuring uniformity across the ranks. Early models showcased higher quality craftsmanship, while later wartime production saw a decline in material and manufacturing standards.

The Type 95 Shin Gunto saw extensive use during World War II, becoming a common sight in the hands of Japanese NCOs. Its practicality and mass production meant it was both functional in combat and symbolic of Japan's military culture. While not as revered as the officer's Type 94 or traditional katanas, the Type 95 gained notoriety due to its association with Japanese wartime actions and has since become a collectible item. Its durability and historical significance make it a notable example of military adaptation during the modern era of warfare.
