The Lanchester Submachine Gun was a British weapon designed during World War II as an emergency measure to arm personnel, particularly in the Royal Navy. Based heavily on the German MP28, the Lanchester featured a simple blowback design and was chambered for the 9x19mm Parabellum cartridge. It was constructed with a solid brass magazine housing and other sturdy components, making it a durable yet heavy weapon. The gun was equipped with a wooden stock and a bayonet lug, reflecting its naval origins and multipurpose intent.

The Lanchester was introduced in 1941, with production carried out primarily by Sterling Armaments Company. Approximately 96,000 units were produced, with two main versions: the Mk I and the simplified Mk I*. The Mk I featured a selective-fire capability, while the Mk I* was limited to full-auto fire to simplify production. The Lanchester was primarily issued to Royal Navy crews, marines, and other auxiliary forces, where its robustness and reliability in maritime environments were highly valued.

Though overshadowed by the more modern and lightweight Sten gun in Army service, the Lanchester gained a reputation for reliability and durability. Its solid construction made it well-suited for harsh naval conditions, and it served throughout World War II and into the postwar period. Despite its limited production and specialized use, the Lanchester remains a notable example of wartime ingenuity and adaptation. Today, it is appreciated by collectors and historians for its robust design and historical significance as a link between British and German submachine gun technology.
