The Franchi SPAS-12 is a combat shotgun developed by the Italian arms manufacturer Franchi in the late 1970s. Designed for versatility, the SPAS-12 can operate in both semi-automatic and pump-action modes, allowing users to quickly switch between firing methods depending on ammunition type or tactical requirements. With its distinctive folding stock, pistol grip, and intimidating aesthetic, the SPAS-12 quickly gained a reputation as a powerful and visually striking shotgun suitable for military and law enforcement.

Production of the SPAS-12 began in 1979 and continued until 2000, with several thousand units manufactured and distributed worldwide. Although the shotgun was adopted by several military and police units globally, it gained particular popularity in the United States, where it was marketed to law enforcement agencies. However, its weight and complex dual-mode action made it challenging to operate effectively in rapid-fire situations, and by the late 1990s, it began to be phased out in favor of lighter and more streamlined shotguns.

The SPAS-12 gained significant notoriety in popular culture, appearing in numerous films, video games, and television series, where it became iconic as a high-powered "tactical" shotgun. This reputation contributed to its mystique and collector interest, even after production ceased. While its real-world utility was often questioned, the SPAS-12 remains an enduring symbol of late-20th-century tactical weaponry, recognized for its intimidating design and association with elite military and law enforcement roles.
