The 9K33 Osa, known by NATO as the SA-8 "Gecko," is a highly mobile, short-range, low-altitude surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed by the Soviet Union in the late 1960s and introduced in 1971. Designed to provide frontline air defense for ground forces, the Osa was unique for its time in being a fully self-contained system mounted on a 6x6 amphibious wheeled vehicle. Each launcher carried its own target acquisition radar, fire control radar, and up to six ready-to-fire missiles, eliminating the need for separate radar vehicles and ensuring rapid, independent deployment.

Production of the Osa spanned the 1970s and 1980s, with thousands of units manufactured and exported widely across the Warsaw Pact and allied nations. The system was continuously modernized, with later variants such as the Osa-AKM offering improved range, guidance, and resistance to electronic countermeasures. The missile itself was solid-fueled, radio-command guided, and capable of engaging aircraft, helicopters, and later even cruise missiles at ranges of up to 15 km. Its mobility, amphibious capability, and relatively fast reaction time made it one of the most versatile tactical SAMs of its era.

The 9K33 Osa saw extensive service in numerous conflicts, including the Iran-Iraq War, the Gulf War, the 2008 Russo-Georgian War, and more recent fighting in Ukraine and the Middle East. It gained notoriety for its combat effectiveness, with several confirmed aircraft shootdowns attributed to it over the decades. Although largely surpassed by modern systems like the Tor-M1 and Pantsir-S1, the Osa remains in service with several countries due to its rugged design, proven track record, and the widespread availability of surplus units. Its longevity underscores its significance as one of the most successful Soviet mobile SAM designs of the Cold War.
