The M1 bayonet was introduced by the United States during World War II as a shortened version of the earlier M1905 bayonet, intended for use with the M1 Garand rifle. Featuring a 10-inch (254 mm) spear-point blade, the M1 bayonet retained the same mounting system as the M1905, with a locking mechanism in the pommel and a muzzle ring in the crossguard. The blade was single-edged with a fullered design, and the handle consisted of black plastic or phenolic resin grips riveted to a full tang. This shorter design improved maneuverability and reduced weight while maintaining combat effectiveness.

The M1 bayonet was primarily produced by converting existing stocks of M1905 and M1942 bayonets, which originally had 16-inch blades. These were cut down and refinished to meet the new standard beginning in 1943. Several manufacturers were involved in production and modification, including American Fork & Hoe, Union Fork & Hoe, and Utica Cutlery. It is estimated that over 2.5 million M1 bayonets were issued by the end of World War II, making it one of the most widely used U.S. bayonets of the conflict.

The M1 bayonet served throughout World War II, the Korean War, and into the early stages of the Vietnam War before being supplanted by newer bayonets designed for the M14 and M16 rifles. It was highly regarded for its balance between reach and practicality and became a symbol of the American infantryman during mid-20th-century conflicts. Today, the M1 bayonet is a prized item among collectors and reenactors, valued for its historical significance and its iconic association with the M1 Garand rifle-the standard-issue firearm of U.S. forces during World War II.
