The Type 81 Rifle is a Chinese-designed firearm that bridges the gap between the earlier Type 56 rifle and more modern assault rifle platforms. Introduced in the early 1980s, it was developed to address the limitations of the Type 56 and the AK-47 derivatives used by the People's Liberation Army (PLA). The Type 81 features a hybrid design combining elements of the AK-47's rugged reliability with the improved accuracy and controllability provided by a longer sight radius and a redesigned gas system.

The Type 81 was produced in large quantities, with estimates of millions manufactured to arm the PLA and other paramilitary units. It was available in multiple variants, including a standard infantry rifle, a carbine version for vehicle crews, and a squad automatic weapon version equipped with a heavier barrel and bipod. The rifle remained in frontline service with the PLA through the 1980s and 1990s, gradually being replaced by the more advanced QBZ-95 bullpup rifle in subsequent decades.

The Type 81 gained notoriety for its role in numerous conflicts and its reputation for reliability under harsh conditions. It saw action in conflicts involving Chinese allies and clients, as well as in domestic security operations. The rifle remains in use among reserve forces and has found popularity in civilian markets in countries where semi-automatic versions are permitted, admired for its historical significance and durability.
